  • Dutch Schultz


    Dutch Schultz pictureDutch Schultz became New York’s “king of beer” and one of the best known New York mobsters of the Prohibition era. He was born in Bronx, New York in 1902 as Arthur Flegenheimer in a Jewish Germans family. His father disappeared when Dutch was only fourteen years old and the absence of his father deeply traumatized him. He began with some petty thefts and assaults, but aged 17 he graduated to more serious crimes. Schultz started his own bootlegging industry. He and was arrested in 1931 on charges of Tax Evasion. In October of 1935 he was murdered.
  • Meyer Lansky


    Meyer Lansky pictureKnown as Lucky Luciano’s right hand and financial mastermind. Lansky Meyers was born in 1902 in Poland to Jewish parents as Maier Suchowljansky. He moved with his family to Lower East Side of New York City in 1911. There he ran into the teenager-gangster Bugsy Siegel, and the two remained lifelong friends. With Lucky Luciano he took over the New York mob, and was charged with handling the finances and money laundering for him. Later Lansky built hotels and casinos in the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean. He died of lung cancer on January 15th, 1983 in Miami Beach, Florida, having never spent time in prison.
  • Al Capone

    Al Capone pictureAlso known as Scarface, the man who ran Chicago with blood and guns. Alphonse Capone was born in in Brooklyn to Neapolitan immigrants Gabriel and Teresina Capone.?Contrary to popular belief, his family were not part of the crimine scene. He quit school after the sixth grade and began as criminal as protege of New York mob Frankie Yale in the early 1920’s. Then he moved to Chicago was placed on the “Most Wanted” list. There were several attempts to murder Al Capone, but he was never seriously wounded. In 1931 when he was indicted and sentenced to 11 years for income tax evasion. On January 25th 1950 he died from cardiac arrest.
  • Sam Giancana

    Sam Giancana pictureSam Giancana was born in 1908 in Chicago, Illinous. His nickname “Momo” was derived from the slang term “Mooney” (which meant “crazy”). At the age of ten he was expelled from school and was sent to St. Charles Reformatory, but joined the 42 Gang in 1921. He was the top syndicate boss in Chicago from 1957 to 1966. Sam Giancana was arrested more than 70 times in his life, but was imprisoned only twice. After an exile in Mexico, Giancana was murdered on June 19th, 1975 with multiple gunshots to the head, in his basement in Oak Park, Illinous.
  • Bugsy Siegel

    Bugsy Siegel pictureBugsy Siegel was the US crime syndicate’s initial developer of Las Vegas gambling. Born as Benjamin Hymen Siegelbaum on February 2nd, 1906 in Brooklyn, New York, to a poor Austrian Jewish family, one of five children. Siegel began as a young street hustler, demanding protection money from pushcart vendors. He earning the moniker ‘Bugsy’ because his ruthless temper often made him appear crazed. He teamed with his close friend Meyer Lansky. Siegel took advantage of the fact that Nevada had legalized gambling in 1931, and built The Flamingo hotel. In 1991, the life of Bugsy Siegel was the subject of the highly fictionalized motion picture Bugsy, with Warren Beatty.
  • Lucky Luciano

    Lucky Luciano pictureLuciano was the most powerful chief of American organized crime in the early 1930s. Charles “Lucky” Luciano was born in 1897 in Lercardia Friddi, Sicily as Salvatore Lucania. The town was known for its sulfur mining and was short jaunt from the largest city of Sicily, Palermo. Lucky Luciano was one of the most famous gangsters in the US during most of the 20th century, He turning syndicated crime into a nation-wide organization based on legitimate business models. He had a major influence even in prison from 1936 to 1945, and after deportation to Italy in 1946. Luciano died on January 26th, 1962 from a heart attack.
  • John Dillinger

John Herbert Dillinger was born on June 22, 1903, in the Oak Hill section of Indianapolis, a middle-class residential neighborhood.?John Dillinger attracted national attention for string of violent bank robberies he committed in the midwestern United States over a period of 13 months in 1933 to 1934. He was imprisoned and escaped several times, and?gunned down by federal agents in 1934.
  • Baby Face Nelson

    Baby Face Nelson picture“Baby Face” Nelson was born Lester M. Gillis on December 6, 1908, in Chicago, Illinois. He was one of seven children of Belgium immigrants Joseph and Mary Gillis.?He roamed the Chicago streets with a gang of juvenile hoodlums during his early teens. By the age of 14, he was an accomplished car thief and shortly thereafter began a string of crimes. Baby Face Nelson holds the dubious distinction of the person having killed the most federal agents.
